10 Simple Ways To Regain Hair

1. Eat Protein
We know getting enough protein is great for our diets, but did you know it may also help stimulate healthy hair growth?  Protein is an essential nutrient for nearly all of our bodily functions, and when our body doesn’t get enough protein, it will begin halting non-essential functions, such as hair growth. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “About 2 to 3 months after a person does not eat enough protein, you can see the hair loss. Eating more protein will stop the hair loss.”

The recommended dietary allowance for protein for women 19 years old and older is 46 grams daily, while the recommended amount for men 19 years old and older is 56 grams daily, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Eating protein-rich foods like eggs, meats, nuts, milk, and tofu may help regain hair that’s visibly healthy.

2. Stress Less
High stress can lead to unwanted hair loss. According to the National Library of Medicine, “Physical or emotional stress may cause one-half to three-quarters of scalp hair to shed. This kind of hair loss is called Telogen effluvium.” Managing and eliminating stress is easier said than done, but it is vital to regain hair. Some beneficial stress management tools are:

  • Set aside time in each day for rest and relaxation.
  • Avoid conversation topics, people and environments that cause stress.
  • Maintain a sense of humor, and watch comedies when feeling stressed.
  • Release stress through strenuous workouts.
  • Talk about thoughts and feelings rather than bottling them up.

3. Use Topical Minoxidil
Minoxidil topical solution is an effective, over-the-counter treatment that dermatologists have proven to support hair growth. Minoxidil solution was originally used as medication to regulate blood pressure, until users started to observe substantial hair growth. Now, topical Minoxidil is formulated in 2% and 5% propylene glycol topical solutions that are applied on the scalp and work to directly nourish and rejuvenate hair follicles.

Minoxidil products are one of the most effective, topical solutions to fight hair loss and thinning. Those using a Minoxidil topical solution tend to see substantial results in about four months.

4. Get Your Nutrients
A diet lacking in nutrients can cause hair loss. B vitamins, iron, protein, and fatty acids may help regain hair. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “Not getting enough iron can lead to hair loss. Good vegetarian sources of iron are iron-fortified cereals, soybeans, pumpkin seeds, white beans, lentils, and spinach. Clams, oysters, and organ meats top the list of good animal sources of iron.”

Individuals who are dieting may also experience hair loss after losing 15 pounds or more, and to combat hair loss during a diet change, supplement with an iron-rich multivitamin, and ensure you’re getting the recommended daily amount of protein.

5. Pamper Your Scalp
Everyone deserves a little pampering, but when we think of pampering, we tend to overlook our scalps. The scalp contains hundreds of thousands of hair follicles that need to receive blood supply for optimal functioning. For proper hair strength and growth, the scalp requires hydration and nourishment. Topical Minoxidil helps to invigorate the scalp follicles. Eating foods rich in zinc and vitamin E and C also helps promote healthy circulation and function of the scalp.

Massaging the scalp with nourishing oils may also help stimulate blood flow and hair growth. Prior to showering, massage coconut, almond, or jojoba oil onto your scalp for several minutes with the tips of your fingers.

6. Say Yes To Caffeine
Sometimes caffeine gets a bad reputation, but caffeine isn’t all bad. Caffeine may actually stimulate hair growth. In a recent study published in the US National Library of Medicine, researches at Friedrich Schiller University found that, “caffeine alone led to a significant stimulation of hair follicle growth.”

This means it may be beneficial to indulge in some healthy sources of caffeine each day in order to promote hair growth. Some healthy sources of caffeine are antioxidant-rich green tea, unsweetened black tea, black coffee or espresso.

7. Help Your Hormones
Our hormones help regulate many of our bodily functions – importantly, hair growth. When hormones are unbalanced due to medications, pregnancy, or simply age, our hair follicles are susceptible to losing strength and size. It’s important to have hormones monitored by a doctor, and supplement, if needed, with hormone balancing supplements.

8. Avoid Damaging Tools & Habits
They may seem harmless, but some daily hair care habits may contribute to hair loss. Brushing wet hair is a common, yet damaging practice. When hair is wet, it is much more likely to be prone to breakage. Instead of brushing wet hair, wait until hair is nearly dry to comb.

Another detrimental practice for hair growth and maintenance is the overuse of heat-producing tools. Daily use of blowdryers and irons may not only damage hair, but the hot tools may actually damage hair follicles that are responsible for generating new, healthy hair growth. A better practice may be allowing hair to air dry, limiting the use of hot tools each week, or using heat protectant products.

9. Wash, But Not Too Much
Hair washing is a critical part of caring for hair and promoting growth, but excessive hair washing may dry out the scalp, minimise hair follicles and strip hair of its natural oils. Most individuals only need to shampoo hair about three times a week, and should shampoo with natural-based products. While shampooing or conditioning, gently massage the scalp with fingertips to stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth.

10. Know Your Genes
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, hereditary, or genetic hair loss is the most common cause of hair loss, effecting nearly 80 million individuals in the United States. While you can’t alter your genes, you can take proactive steps toward stopping the cycle of balding, thinning hair.

Dermatologists recommend applying Minoxidil 5 for men and Minoxidil 2 for women twice daily to best combat hereditary hair loss.
